IN THE ABSENCE of any real cold front, saltwater fishing still has that summer feeling.
To the west we’re seeing lots of blues and weakfish being caught, along with porgies, sea bass and fluke. Off the East End there are still big sharks to be had, and good action at the Shelf.
Jimmy Giordano, from Bernie’s Bait and Tackle Shop in Sheepshead Bay, says that weakfishing at the Reach on the Staten Island is about as good as it gets.
Anglers aboard the party boat Flamingo III are loading up on five- to seven-pound blues at the Tin Can Grounds.
Bottom fishing at the east reef and Sandy Hook reef has produced sea bass and porgies. The false albies are being taken on Tsunami’s near the breezy jetty.
Montauk Point has been on the big side, as well. John Munroe of Milford, Conn., landed a 451-pound thresher on Sunday.
The canyons also are still offering nice action. Larry Brown had his boat, the Seascription, out to East Atlantis Canyon last week and landed a 725-pound blue marlin.
