Four garbage bags containing human body parts were discovered over the weekend in a secluded area of a park, police said yesterday.
The bags, located within 100 yards of each other, were found late Sunday by a New Jersey police officer in the sprawling South Mountain Reservation in East Orange, N.J., said Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura.
“The first bag had shin parts and 50 to 100 yards up the road were three more bags that had legs, arms and thighs,” said Fontoura. “We’re talking about one [person]. It’s all from the same body.”
Cops searched a one-mile radius with cadaver dogs but did not find any other body parts. The remains were taken to the regional medical examiner’s office in Newark for analysis. Fontoura said determining the age, ethnicity and gender of the apparent single victim may take weeks or months.
The four bags were likely dumped from a vehicle, said Fontoura, who called the area “quiet, peaceful and tranquil.”
