A firefighter on a cherry picker moves yesterday to rescue a woman trapped in a smoky blaze at Queens housing project that left more than 30 people injured, including two of New York’s Bravest, who suffered burns.
An overloaded electrical outlet sparked the 1:45 p.m. blaze at the Beach 41st Street Houses in Far Rockaway, filling the 13-story building with thick smoke.
About 20 residents were treated at hospitals for smoke inhalation, while 12 firefighters went to Nassau County Medical Center.
Two of the firefighters suffered severe burns on their hands and ears.
None of the injuries suffered by firefighters or civilians was life threatening, authorities said.
The three-alarm blaze started in a sixth-floor apartment where a portable space heater was among several appliances plugged into the outlet.
Strong ocean winds fueled the blaze as it engulfed the apartment.
