THE “Golden Girls” are ganging up on their biggest fan -Vogue editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley. The stars of the hit ’80s sitcom – Rue McClanahan, Betty White and Bea Arthur – fired off a fax to Talley’s office yesterday, pleading with him to stop wearing fur to fashion shows.
The personal appeal from the iconic oldsters may have special resonance with Talley, who has been outspoken about his love of “The Golden Girls.”
Appearing on “Oprah” last year to talk about his battle to lose weight, Talley said, “I used to binge – I’d go home after a hard day – I’d go home at 11 at night, skip a meal, turn on the TV, look at ‘The Golden Girls’ and eat a sleeve or two of Oreo cookies – and that would be dinner.” But “The Golden Girls” say Talley’s fur habit is worse than his Oreo indulgence.
“I was delighted to hear that you are a fan of ‘The Golden Girls,'” McClanahan wrote Talley. “As you may know, Bea Arthur, Betty White, and I are all very involved with animal causes … I saw photos of you in fur at the fashion shows this week. Would you consider donating your furs? I would be honored to meet with you to accept them. PETA takes coats donated by people who have had a change of heart about wearing fur.”
Vogue spokesman Patrick O’Connell responded, “Andre is, indeed, a big fan of Rue McClanahan and ‘The Golden Girls.’ Other than that, he has no comment.”
