Two top aides to Schools Chancellor Joel Klein announced their resignations yesterday, including the woman responsible for the instruction of 1.1 million public-school students.
Carmen Farina, 63, deputy chancellor for teaching and learning, said she decided to retire at the end of the school year.
She will be succeeded by Andres Alonso, a Cuban immigrant with degrees from Columbia and Harvard Law School.
Klein also announced that Stephen Morello, his communications director, will resign at the end of June. Morello will be replaced by Julia Levy, a former reporter for The New York Sun.
