The long-awaited reopening of Yonkers Raceway is set to take place this morning – but without any horses.
And this has infuriated the racing industry, which charges the trotting track has become only a front for a casino. After a ribbon-cutting ceremony, patrons will be greeted by 1,800 video-gaming machines and two restaurants.
“It stinks to high heaven,” said Joseph Faraldo, president of the Standardbred Owners Association, which represents owners, trainers and drivers at the track.
But Yonkers Raceway Vice President Timothy Rooney Jr. said the state Racing and Wagering Board has given permission, and added he expected horse racing to begin in seven to 10 days.
