Houston’s “20” remains a curse

By MARC BERMAN

Retired Allan Houston showed up at the Knicks’ morning shootaround, his former “No. 20’’ jersey already jinxing Isiah Thomas’ new prized addition.

Jared Jeffries asked to wear Houston’s old number over the summer and called Allan to inform him. Unfortunately, Jeffries’ stint is off to a cursed start as the Knicks officially announced the timetable for his displaced left wrist fracture being six to eight weeks. That means Jeffries could miss all of November – at least the season’s first 17 games.

Houston actually worked with Jeffries at the end of the shootaround when the rest of the club had repaired to the lockerroom of their Westchester practice facility. Jeffries, whose left hand is in a brace, was shooting onehanded foul shots with his healthy right hand and Houston collected rebounds.

Houston, who retired with chronic knee trouble last training camp, said, “He called me, we talked this summer, told me he was going to wear it. What matters most is the character. He’s a good guy. I trust him. He’ll make sure “20’’ gets represented right.’’

Because of his strong relationship with owner Jim Dolan, there was speculation Houston’s “20’’ could be retired one day. Jeffries has a five-year contract.

Houston, who will work for ESPN this season, was mixed about missing last season’s 23-59 horror show. “I’m kind of glad I got out of situation but as I watched, a lot of me wanted me to be in it because I saw some things on the court I could help, like communication,’’ Houston said. “But it would have been all of my fault with my contract. They would have been blaming it all on me. At the end of the day, I still wanted to be in it.’’

Thomas hopes Houston pops in now and then. Houston told The Post last April he still was considering trying a comeback. Last week, he said in a published report that hasn’t changed, but has to wait until his contract expires after this season because of his medical retirement that is being paid mostly by insurance.

“I told him to always treat the place like it’s his,’’ Thomas said. “He’s welcome any place we go, anytime he wants to come and hang out, work out. He’s a Knick. It’s one of the privileges afforded him because of the career he’s had.’’
