VICK’S ‘VANILLA’ JUST SOUR

GIANT NOTES

Michael Vick following Sunday’s 27-14 loss called the Giants defense “pretty vanilla.” The Giants believe there was some tuttifrutti in Vick’s comment.

“If we played a vanilla defense then that’s saying a lot about them, that a vanilla defense went out and played that well against them,” linebacker Brandon Short said yesterday.

No quarterback is more elusive than Vick, yet the Giants sacked him seven times, forced him to fumble the ball four times and generally turned him into an ineffective and at times confused passer. Still, Vick said the Giants were “pretty basic” in the way they attacked him.

“That was a lame thing to say,” linebacker Antonio Pierce said. “If it was vanilla you don’t get sacked seven times, you don’t put the ball on the floor four times, you don’t lose.”

Pierce thinks he knows what was eating Vick. Last week, Pierce said going against Vick, Warrick Dunn and the Falcons was akin to facing two running backs.

The only injuries to come out of the game were to S Jason Bell (mild concussion) and RB Brandon Jacobs (neck stinger). Neither is considered serious. … It is far from a sure thing that S Gibril Wilson will be able to play vs. the Cowboys. Wilson had his right foot accidentally stepped on by practice squad TE Darcy Johnson near the end of last Friday’s practice, causing an injury that’s not for the squeamish. The big toenail on Wilson’s right foot was ripped off and had to be sutured back in place. There was a great deal of swelling and pain and Wilson is currently walking around in a protective boot. Bell, in his sixth NFL season, made his first career start in place of Wilson and coach Tom Coughlin said Bell did “an outstanding job.”
