Marie Antoinette is having a costume moment – and New Yorkers are eating it up!
Costume shops say women have been losing their heads over this Halloween’s over-the-top outfit of the beheaded 18th-century French queen, played by Kirsten Dunst in the film “Marie Antoinette,” which opened Friday.
The costume is flying off the shelves, the shop owners say, despite its heady price tag – up to $450 to buy and $200 to rent for a night.
One variety of the get-up has a fitted pink satin bodice with silver jeweled trim and a matching satin hoop skirt. Black pannier undergarments are hidden underneath.
A powdered wig has curls held with pearls and gold pins and festooned with feathers.
Some stores even offer caked-on makeup.
“We even rent jewelry like pearl necklaces to finish off the look,” said Linda Carcaci, owner of the Creative Costume Company store in Midtown. “We’ve been getting dozens of calls a day on Marie Antoinette.”
Abracadabra Superstore on 21st Street is trying to keep up with the Marie wig demand.
“Even if they don’t buy the costume, they’re buying the wigs and putting their own spin on it,” owner Paul Blum said.
He’s sold a few dozen full costumes already – at $450 a pop.
