Sen. Charles Schumer crossed the Hudson yesterday to stump for New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez as a new poll showed the Democratic incumbent with a slight lead over his Republican challenger.
Menendez leads Tom Kean Jr. 48 percent to 42 percent, according to a poll of 600 likely voters published yesterday in The Record of Bergen County.
Thirty percent of voters said the Iraq war was the most important issue in deciding their vote. Voters, by a margin of 53-35 percent, also want to see Democrats control Congress.
The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. It was conducted by phone Oct. 23-25.
Schumer, chairman of the Senate Democratic Campaign Committee, and Menendez released a report showing that college tuition rose 22 percent in New York and 31 percent in New Jersey since 2000. They both accused congressional leaders of failing to extend a tax break for students in favor of restoring $5 billion worth of breaks for major oil companies.
“That’s why we need Menendez in office,” Schumer said.
