MAKEUP mixologists are back in the lab concocting a New York woman’s dream product – long-lasting lipstick that actually works.
Estée Lauder recently reintroduced its popular All-Day lipsticks in a range of new colors. And Shu Uemura’s new Rouge Unlimited collection that features patentpending technology that helps color adhere to the lips better will hit counters in late November.
“All day for lipstick means around six hours. But that doesn’t mean that you’re going to feel like it’s on your lips all day, it just means there will be a color impression,” says Anne Carullo, senior vice president of corporate product innovation for Estée Lauder. “Basically, it means that you’ll look in the mirror and you won’t see brown, gray and nude lips.” But can lipstick really last all day? We had our testers DeDe and Anne pucker up, sip and smooch to see which ones really paid lip service.
1) ESTEE LAUDER ALL-DAY
Price: $17
Looks like: The color of a brand-new penny. Caffe Latte is shiny and sparkly.
Feels like: Soft and easy to apply, but slightly waxy, which gave us hope that it would adhere to our lips.
Does it work? Thought we lost tons on our coffee mug, but when we looked in the mirror, there was plenty left.
Rating: 3 kisses
2) ELIZABETH ARDEN CERAMIDE PLUMP PERFECT
Price: $21.50
Looks like: We tested the smooth color in Perfect Ginger- a creamy, nude rose.
Feels like: Soft and kind of slippery, which made us think that it would slide right off during the test.
Does it work? We were right. We lost most of the pretty color on to the straw, leaving barely anything left on our lips.
Rating: 1 kiss
3) LANCOME JUICY WEAR ULTRA-LASTING LIP DUO (Sexiest look)
Price: $25.50
Looks like: Lancome’s Pink Gourmand deposits a lot of color and a lot of shine.
Feels like: At first, it feels like wet cement. The first step, the lipstick, is very drying. But, as soon as you apply the lip gloss on top, it gets really moist and shiny. It’s like the perfect combination of the two.
Does it work? The moist, glossy part came off on to our cocktail napkin. But, there was so much dry color left on our lips that all we had to do was reapply the gloss and it looked perfect.
Rating: 3 kisses
4) SHU UEMURA ROUGE UNLIMITED (Best overall)
Price: $23 (available late November)
Looks like: This heavily pigmented color, OR 590, is bright, orange and beautiful.
Feels like: It was pretty waxy and not very smooth, but it had enough moisture in it that our lips didn’t feel dried out.
Does it work? Almost a little too well; even with makeup wipes we struggled to get all the color off of our lips.
Rating: 4 kisses
5) PLAYBOY BEAUTY RED CARPET
Price: $14
Looks like: We tested Charade, a light rust that showed the little cracks in our lips.
Feels like: Having the Sahara on your lips – so drying! And since it lacked moisture it was hard to apply.
Does it work? Absolutely. Even after two kisses, it was still there. But isn’t really worth it, considering the dryness.
Rating: 2 kisses
6) LA PRAIRIE’S CELLULAR LIP RENEWAL CONCENTRATE
Price: $85
Looks like: Violette, a light, rosy pink. Left our lips pretty dry – we looked like we could have used some chapstick.
Feels like: It really stuck on there. Even when we pressed our lips together, the color didn’t seem to move around a lot. Also, tasted a little weird.
Does it work? For the price, we’re not so sure it’s worth it. But, the color was pretty and it did stay on fairly well.
Rating: 2 kisses
7) TERRY ROUGE DELECTATION
Price: $40 at Barneys
Looks like: This creamy, matte lipstick in Caramel Rouge is a rich, deep maroon.
Feels like: A mix between a lip gloss and a lipstick. Our tester said she thought this was the perfect texture.
Does it work? Not at all. Although we loved the way he looked and felt, it barely stayed on.
Rating: 1 kiss
8) KEVYN AUCOIN EXPERT LIP TINT
Price: $23
Looks like: Just a hint of color, Falon is a dusty pink that goes on very lightly.
Feels like: It felt thin and watery.
Does it work? Not at all. Most of it kissed off on to the napkin when we blotted our mouth. And, what was left was not enough; we’d definitely have to reapply.
Rating: 1 kiss
9) GUERLAIN KISSKISS MAXI SHINE
Price: $26
Looks like: Shiny and moist, Cherry Shine is a sparkly mauve that reminds us of Christmas. Our lips kind of looked like the top of a glazed donut.
Feels like: Wet, kind of like we had a coat of lip gloss on underneath.
Does it work? After one kiss, we lost the glossy look and feel, but there was some color left on our lips.
Rating 2 kisses
10) L’OREAL ENDLESS KISSABLE LIPCOLOUR (Longest lasting)
Price: $9.75
Looks like: Smooth, even color No. 520 is a medium pinky rose.
Feels like: Easy to apply, moderate moisture but a little too waxy. And after a few seconds, it started to get really sticky. It also smells like cherry cough syrup.
Does it work? It stayed on longer than any other one we tried. Nothing came off while we sipped coffee. But the smell hurt it overall.
Rating: 3 kisses
