San Diego

When I landed here yesterday, I called a friend of mine back in New York, and when I told him I was in San Diego, he said something along the lines of, “Are you staying classy?”

That’s an “Anchorman” reference, for anybody who didn’t catch it. Good film. Better city.

I do a ton of traveling with this job, and there’s no question that my favorite city to come to is San Diego. Everything about it is great — the weather, the atmosphere, the scenery, the feeling. Other top cities in my book? Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Denver and at times, LA. My least favorite? Houston, Detroit, Houston and Detroit. Yes, I did that on purpose.

As for the Mets, tough series here against the Padres, though I didn’t even realize until a few minutes ago that the Mets are actually ahead of San Diego in the overall NL standings. Still, there might be a sense that the Padres are better, and at least for this series, I’m going to agree. I think John Maine will pitch a gem on Wednesday, but I say the Mets lose two of three to San Diego.

I’ve gotten my last two series picks right — a split in Houston and the Mets taking three of four versus the Reds — so we’ll see if I can nail three in a row.

SERIES PICKED: 29

SERIES I GOT RIGHT: 15

By the way, another paper mentioned this today and beat me to it, but I realized that since Rickey Henderson joined the Mets coaching staff, Jose Reyes is 0-for-2 in stolen bases.
