The Mets Aquired Luis Castillo for
two minor-league prospects, both foxsports.com and the Minneapolis
Star-Tribune are reporting. The Mets gave the Twins Class
AA catcher Drew Butera, the son of former major league catcher Sal
Butera. Another name not yet confirmed in the deal is Class A outfielder
Dustin Martin.
The deal is expected to happen after a review of the medical records
of the players involved. Castillo would replace Jose Valentin on the Mets, who
recently broke his leg, at second base.
The Mets have used Ruben Gotay and Damion Easley at second, but
Castillo is a starter who helped the Marlins to their 2003 World
Series title.
Castillo’s season numbers thus far are impressive, hitting .304 with a .356 on base percentage. His numbers make him an excellent candidate for the number
two spot behind Jose Reyes.
