A total stranger to “Preppy Killer” Robert Chambers’ crack-addicted girlfriend will be in court today trying to win her release from Rikers Island.
Professional comedian and drug-law-reform activist Randy Credico has never met the troubled woman, Shawn Kovell, but he has already posted her $25,000 bail out of his own pocket.
“She’s sick,” Credico, a former drug abuser, said yesterday.
“She should have gone directly into treatment,” he said. “Rikers Island is not the place for people who are sick. Medical care at Rikers is like medical care in Andersonville – you know, the Civil War” POW camp.
Today, the Samaritan comedian is scheduled to return to Manhattan Supreme Court with bank statements and other financial documents proving the bail money he posted is “clean,” meaning not the proceeds of any criminal activity.
Kovell, 39, and Chambers, 41, have been in jail since they were arrested together Oct. 22 at her East 57th Street apartment on felony drug-sale charges.
