Long Island is the second healthiest place in America for women, while the Big Apple was eighth, according to a survey released yesterday.
Nassau and Suffolk counties took second place in Self magazine’s annual “Healthiest Places for Women” survey.
Self’s editors considered 50 categories – from depression rates to hiking trails – and also considered safety issues.
“Our residents won’t tolerate a crime problem getting worse,” Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice told the magazine.
New York City got good grades for having a smoking ban and safe drivers, but lost points for the long commute.
San Francisco earned top honors, with its clean air and water, and high proportion – 93 percent – of women with health insurance.
Gary, Ind., was the cellar-dweller, knocked for high cancer rates and polluted air and water.
New Haven and Milford, Conn., were the “most sexually healthy” cities in the nation. Women there have 53 percent fewer sexually transmitted diseases than average, according to Self.
