BLACK: PRISON WOULD BE A BORE
Conrad Black, finally appearing to acknowledge he could end up doing hard time for looting money from investors in his newspaper company, said prison “would be a bore.”
The former press baron is slated to be sentenced on Monday in a Chicago courtroom to as many as 35 years behind bars for fraud and obstruction of justice. Legal experts said Black, 63, is more likely to get less than 10 years.
“I can cope with it if it comes, and it will . . . only compound the injustice of this entire vendetta,” he wrote in e-mails to Canadian public broadcaster CBC.
“Prison would be a bore, but quite endurable.”
Black, the author of several books, added that he doesn’t consider prison “shaming” and pointed to other famous people who wound up doing jail time, such as domestic diva Martha Stewart.
Prosecutors are urging the judge to give the Canadian-born media mogul turned British lord a stiff sentence for his lack of remorse. When asked by the CBC whether he’s sorry and plans to ask the judge for leniency, Black responded, “Wait until Monday and learn the answers.” [email protected]
