‘Girl’ power outage
I keep reading/hearing how The CW’s “Gossip Girl” is a “hit new show.” Yes, “Gossip Girl” does have its loyal viewers, and yes, it is doing well in its core demo (young women). But I’ve never heard of a “hit new show” that aver ages 2.5 million viewers on a broadcast network, as did Wednesday’s “Gossip Girl” episode – nearly 3 million less viewers than its closest competitor, a repeat of Fox’s “Kitchen Nightmares.”
By com parison, Tyler Per ry’s “House of Payne” is a bona fide “hit new show,” al beit on cable (TBS). Wednesday’s 10 p.m. episode averaged 3.7 million viewers – over a million more view ers than “Gossip Girl” – and the 10:30 “Payne” episode did almost as well, pulling in 3.6 million viewers.
In other ratings news, ABC’s daytime lineup won the November sweep among the all-important women 18-49 demo – its fourth con secutive November sweeps victory – while CBS Daytime remained tops in total view ers (nearly 4 million) by a comfortable margin.
