A bickering gay couple discovers the true meaning of the holidays in “Los Nutcrackers: A Christmas Carajo,” a queer Latino play that interweaves “The Nutcracker” and “A Christmas Carol” to tell the story of Carlos and Gabriel as they embark on a psychedelic trip through their lives on Christmas Eve. Quiero Rock
Not to be confused with Mexico’s national futbol team of the same name, El Tri is a pioneer blues/hard-rock band that has been around since the ’60s and holds the distinction of having been the first Mexican rock group to score a gold record. Frontman Alex Lora, who describes rock and roll as the fountain of youth, sings about rebellion and average folks (prostitutes, truck drivers and soccer fans) with equal fervor. Scary Movie
“The Orphanage,” directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, is a horror flick about a woman who returns to the house in which she was raised and discovers its secret past when her son makes an imaginary friend. Reel Life
This year’s edition of Spanish Cinema Now offers 15 new films, including “Teresa, el cuerpo de Cristo” (“Theresa, The Body of Christ”), starring Paz Vega as a 16th century mystic nun targeted by The Inquisition. Also screening are seven films by controversial director Pilar Miró, whose “Cuenca Crime” was banned from Spanish cinemas in 1971.
