The Golden Globes occasionally list six instead of seven nominees in a category, but this year’s Best Picture list goes all the way up to seven. “American Gangster,” “Atonement,” “Michael Clayton,” “No Country for Old Men” and “There Will Be Blood” are all Oscar contenders that belong there. We’re willing to give them “Eastern Promises,” a terrific picture that could use a boost — and the HPFA did nominate Viggo Mortensen as Best Actor. But the real head-scratcher is the Best Picture nomination for “The Great Debaters,” an inspiration flick of modest quality that didn’t score a single other nomination in any category. Was this the HFPA’s favor to their longtime pal, the struggling Harvey Weinstein? He scored a standalone nod for the excerable “Bobby” last year, and today also picked score and songwriting nods to Clint Eastwood for “Grace is Gone,” though Harv no doubt would have preferred a Best Actor nod for John Cusack. Or did the HPBA just want to add Oprah Winfrey, the producer of “The Great Debaters,” to the guest list? They already had its star/director, Denzel Washington, by nominating him for Best Actor — for “American Gangster.”
