Expect fewer peak-hour flights and potentially higher fares at Kennedy Airport under a federal plan to slash the maximum number of hourly takeoffs and landings by about 20 percent.
“These limits will do much to end scheduling practices that try to squeeze in more flights an hour than runways can efficiently handle,” federal Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said yesterday.
Some airlines, including Delta and JetBlue, have already moved flights to less-congested hours.
If other airlines follow suit, Kennedy passengers will see more service “spaced out more reasonably,” Peters said.
Under the rules, to take effect in March, the maximum number of hourly takeoffs and landings at Kennedy will be cut from about 100 to 82 or 83.
The Port Authority, which runs the airport, warned that fewer flights will probably mean higher fares.
