The owner of a renowned Manhattan gallery specializing in early Chinese art, artifacts and crafts pleaded guilty yesterday to evading more than $1 million in taxes.
Michael Weisbrod, 56, owner of Weisbrod Chinese Art in Midtown, must pay $1.1 million to the state and city under the plea.
He admitted in Manhattan Supreme Court that he failed to collect taxes on at least 10 sales over the past five years and neglected to file corporate and personal income taxes.
The gallery pleaded guilty through its lawyer to a “repeated failure to file” corporate taxes, the DA’s office said.
The gallery at 36 E. 57th St., was founded in 1972 by Weisbrod’s father, Gerald, a dentist and art collector in Toronto.
He was not charged in the tax scam.
