Oscar Watch: SAGgies Snub ‘Atonement,’ ‘Sweeney,’ ‘Wilson,’ Boost ‘Hairspray,’ ‘Wild,’ ‘Yuma’

Today’s nominations for the Screen Actors Guild were most interesting for what was left out — “Atonement,” which led the Golden Globes nominations last week, didn’t score one from SAG, nor did the much-touted “Sweeney Todd” or “Charlie Wilson’s War,” both tough sells that could really have used the boost for their openings this weekend. But another musical, “Hairspray,” did score a nomination for best ensemble — SAG’s rough equivalent of best picture — as did “3:10 to Yuma,” another flick that’s been flying under the awards radar. Hal Holbrook and Cathleen Keener of “Into the Wild” also scored noms in the supporting categories from the actors along with lead actor Emile Hirsch and the entire ensemble, leading with four nominations. There were three nominations apiece for “No Country for Old Men” and “Michael Clayton” and two for “American Gangster,” including Ruby Dee in support. Interestingly, there were just two nomination for December releases on the SAG list — Ellen Page for “Juno” and Daniel Day-Lewis for “Let There Be Blood” — suggesting the flood of late screeners may have backfired. The actors, of course, comprise the largest branch of the motion picture academy and their awards will be televised even if the WGA strike goes on into January (unlike the Globes). The full list is on the jump. Best Actor: George Clooney, “Michael Clayton,” Daniel Day-Lewis, “There Will Be Blood,” Ryan Gosling, “Lars and the Real Girl,” Emile Hirsch, “Into the Wild,” Viggo Mortensen, “Eastern Promises.”
