WASHINGTON – The White House yesterday issued a four-page statement attacking a story in the New York Times as “inaccurate” and even “pernicious and troubling.”
“The New York Times’ inference that there is an effort to mislead in this matter is pernicious and troubling, and we are formally requesting that [the paper] correct the sub-headline of this story,” the White House fumed.
In response, the Times corrected the headline on its Web site and promised to run a correction in today’s editions.
“We have made the appropriate correction online, and will print a correction,” Times spokeswoman Catherine Mathis told The Post yesterday in an e-mail.
In the story, the Times accused the White House of lying about the extent of its involvement in the destruction of CIA interrogation tapes.
“White House Role Was Wider Than It Said,” charged the subheadline.
