Inter maintained its four-point lead intact today over Roma at the top of Serie A standings following a 2-0 win over Fiorentina.
Romaâs 3-1 at Udinese forced Inter to look for the win against a Fiorentina team riding high after booking their place in the semifinals of the UEFA Cup on Thursday. Despite Viola goalkeeper Sebastien Frey producing a string of fine saves in the first half, Inter finally broke through when Esteban Cambiasso scored in the 55th minute. Mario Balotelli capped his second successive start with a goal in as many games to seal the win seven minutes later.
Inter has 75 points with five rounds to play, followed by Roma at 71, Juventus 61 and Fiorentina 56.
In the relegation zone, eight teams are fighting to avoid the final three spots that would push them into the second division: Torino 34, followed by Catania and Cagliari, both with 32, Parma 31, Reggina and Empoli 30 and Livorno at 29.
Earlier in the day, Roma welcomed back its captain Francesco Totti to the line-up, but trailed thanks to a Antonio Di Natale goal five minutes into what was to prove a very entertaining second half. The Giallorossi appeared to be in disarray as goalkeeper Alexander Doni and defender Christian Panucci clashed following the goal.
But Roma composed itself and thanks to goals from strikers Mirko Vucinic and Rodrigo Taddei before Ludovic Giulyâs last-gasp tally sealed the win.
At the other end of the standings, Livornoâs poor home form continued as they slumped into last place after losing to fellow relegation strugglers Cagliari, 2-1.
Reggina, meanwhile, climbed out of the basement following a 1-0 win over Sampdoria. Franco Brienza scored the only goal of the game after 34 minutes to seal the win, taking them to within a point of safety.
Napoliâs dim hopes of attaining a UEFA Cup spot were kept alive thanks to a 2-0 win over Atalanta, moving them nine points behind sixth-placed Sampdoria, who occupy the final spot. A string of fine saves from Ferdinando Coppola frustrated Napoli until Marek Hamsik struck in the 62nd minute before Ezequiel Lavezzi made the points safe three minutes later.
In other games on Sunday: Empoli 1, Parma 1; Genoa 3, Torino 0; Lazio 1, Siena 1.
