MLB: Willis placed on 15-day DL

Twenty-four hours after missing out on the Hobey Baker award, Nathan Gerbe, the nation’s leading scorer, led Boston College 4-1 over Notre Dame at the sold-out Pepsi Center in Denver as the Eagles finally hoisted the trophy after losing in the title game to Wisconsin in 2006 and Michigan State last year.
TENNIS: U.S. loses in doubles
In Winston-Salem, N.C., Bob and Mike Bryan failed to win their doubles match yesterday, giving France hope in its Davis Cup quarterfinal with the United States.
Michael Llodra and Arnaud Clement rallied past the top-ranked twins 6-7 (7), 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 to cut the Americans’ lead to 2-1 in the best-of-five competition.
* In Bremen, Germany, Spain advanced to the Davis Cup semifinals after saving two match points to win a five-set doubles and establish an unassailable 3-0 lead over Germany.

In Morelia, Mexico, Lorena Ochoa closed in on the last point she needs to qualify for the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame, shooting her third straight 7-under 66 on to take a seven-stroke lead in the Corona Championship.
HOOPS: 3 injured as stands collapse
In Memphis, Tenn., three people were injured before a game between the Timberwolves and Grizzlies when a small section of the stands at FedExForum collapsed.
One man was taken away on a stretcher and two others were treated at the scene.

In Howell, Mich., former Cy Young Award winner Denny McLain has been released from jail following his arrest on a warrant related to a civil case.
SKIING: Nicoletta dies in fall
In Anchorage, Alaska, Colorado extreme skier John Nicoletta lost control when he tried to ski off a band of rock called the Headwall, tumbling to his death in the Subaru Freeskiing World Championships at the Alyeska Ski Resort in Girdwood.
Nicoletta died Friday. He was 27.
NASCAR: Johnson wins
In Avondale, Ariz., Jimmie Johnson gave Hendrick Motorsports its first NASCAR Sprint Cup victory of the year, winning a fuel gamble last night at Phoenix International Speedway.
As leader after leader dove for the pits to take on gas in the waning laps, Johnson’s No. 48 Chevrolet stayed on track and the two-time reigning Cup champion made it to the finish, beating Clint Bowyer – another gambler – by 7.002 seconds.
