RECYCLING has never been more fashionable – literally.
1. A combo of rubber, scrap leather and other waste from the Nike factory floor gets a second life in the form of the Steve Nash “Trash Talk,” for $100 starting on Tuesday, exclusively at House of Hoops by Foot Locker, 268 W. 125th St.; (212) 316-1667.
2. Designer Nahui Ollin uses candy wrappers to create chic handbags like this black-and-white “ER” bag, $245; available at Two Angels (1239 First Ave.; [212] 988-8545).
3. Gaiam‘s Flip-Flop Doormats ($28 to $45 at realgoods.com) are foamy as the sole of your fave summer footwear – because they’re made from them!
4. JC Penney‘s eco-bags and World Wildlife Fund T-shirts ($12 each at JC Penney stores) are made of 50 percent organic cotton and 50 percent recycled bottles.
5. Radley‘s automatic umbrellas ($55 at Caravan 91, 128 E. 91st St.; [212] 722-7282 and trulyradleydeeply.com) are made from post-consumer waste plastic bottles. Plus: Totes’
Eco-brella ($30 at totes.com) is made of 100 percent recycled bottles, the frame contains 70 percent recycled aluminum and the strap is waxed hemp. And Stetson for Opening Ceremony‘s “Sonic Fabric” biker hat ($125 at Opening Ceremony: 35 Howard St., [212] 219-2688) is made from cassette tapes.
* Earth tones: Seven great new eco-friendly beauty products
1. Tarte’s “Double Dose” ($21 at Sephora) lip gloss uses sustainable acai plants from the Amazon rain forest. The company also supports the region’s Sustainable Acai Program through forest conservation and social programs to benefit communities in rural Brazil.
2. Butter London nail polish, ($12
at butterlondon.com) is free of formaldehyde, toluene and DBP (dibutyl phthalate), which are bad for the environment and potentially for your health.
3. Pure & Natural’s cleansing bar is a paraben-free, vegetable-based soap. But what we really love is the eco-packaging made with 100 percent recycled paper with embedded seeds: Plant the paper in a pot on your window sill, follow the directions, and you should have a bunch of baby’s breath in four to six weeks.
4. Noah’s Natural certified organic coconut vanilla body lotion – free of petroleum, parabens and sodium lauryl sulfate – is only $8 at Wal-Mart, which makes the eco-conscious choice a wallet-conscious one, too.
5. Wellness by Clean ($76 at Sephora) is made with corn-derived alcohol, but it won’t actually make you smell like vegetables. The ultra- gentle fragrance is free of synthetics and petroleum – great for sensitive skin.
6. Organic Glam Makeup is a line of corn-based color cosmetics including shimmering eye color, glossy lipsticks, loose powder and long-lasting liquid eyeliner ($34 to $60 at theorganicpharmacy.com).
7. Tweezerman’s new Go Green mini slant tweezers ($10) donates $1 to the Arbor Day Foundation and plants a tree for every tweezer purchased. Visit tweezerman.com to find a retailer.
* Pound of flash: Housing Works’ new store By the Pound (261 W. 36th St. at Eighth Avenue) opens today at 10 a.m. Clothing – Gap T-shirts! Chanel suits in need of TLC! – costs $3 a pound, and all profits benefit local HIV charity Housing Works.
* Sunshine on your shoulders: Did you know that Diane von Furstenberg’s print factory is solar-powered? Now you do. Diane von Furstenberg “Kaomo” dress, $345 at Diane von Furstenberg (874 Washington St., [646] 486-4800,
dvf.com).
