On the heels of Pennsylvania is the May 6 North Carolina primary, where Barack Obama leads in polls 47 to 34 percent and where record numbers are registering to vote.
More than 67,000 blacks have registered since Jan. 1, triple the number that voted in 2004, state records show.
And there are 123,000 registered female voters, compared to 37,824 in 2004.
Approximately 81,000 18-to-24-year-olds have signed up for their first presidential primary.
Most of the new voters are Democrats, with the number more than tripling from 2004 to 109,534.
Republican registrations have doubled – 52,533 this year compared to 23,000 in 2004.
