METS CAN’T PUT FISH TO SWEEP

There were pitches that Mike Pelfrey threw yesterday that weren’t good. But he regretted some others because they weren’t smart.

It was a tough day for Pelfrey and the Mets, who were pounded in an 8-2 loss to the Marlins at Shea. It was an uninspiring defeat that ended any hope of a sweep and any possibility of the Mets tying the Phillies for first place in the NL East. The Mets trail the Phillies by two games, and the Marlins remain 2 1/2 games behind.

The Mets barely hit impressive Florida right-hander Josh Johnson, and Pelfrey failed to last five innings for the second time in his past three starts, giving up six runs in 42/3 innings.

“I think that I executed some bad pitches, made some bad pitches,” Pelfrey said. “And I threw some stupid pitches. I made some stupid pitches that I shouldn’t have thrown.”

Pelfrey continues to struggle against the Marlins.

In his major league debut two years ago, Pelfrey beat the Marlins, but he hasn’t done it since. He is 1-4 with a 7.20 ERA against the Marlins in his career.

If you want to know his numbers against Florida this season, hide the kids for a minute.

This season, Pelfrey is 0-3 with a 10.66 ERA against the Marlins. He’s 10-5 with a 3.45 ERA against everyone else.

“The numbers don’t lie,” Pelfrey said.

Pelfrey put the Mets in a 2-0 hole in the second, mostly because of back-to-back doubles to Mike Jacobs and Dan Uggla.

Pelfrey said he hung a backdoor slider to Jacobs.

Though the Mets cut the lead to 2-1 in the third, Pelfrey surrendered a key run in the fourth. With two outs and nobody on, he gave up three straight singles, the last one Matt Treanor’s RBI hit that made it 3-1.

“For them to come back and get that run with two outs was probably indicative of the way the game was going to flow,” interim manager Jerry Manuel said. “That was really huge.”

The Marlins scored three more runs in the fifth to secure the victory.

“I didn’t perform today,” Pelfrey said. “I didn’t give the team a chance.”

Pelfrey, 24, has thrown 138 innings this year, the second highest on the team behind Johan Santana’s 161.

He threw 1522/3 last season in the majors and minors combined and is on pace to eclipse that number by the end of this month.

“We might give him an extra day here or there,” Manuel said, referring to Pelfrey’s inning total.

Perhaps next time against the Marlins would be a good option.
