PLAX: CONTRACT TALKS DEAD; HE SITS AGAIN

ALBANY – Plaxico Burress doesn’t envision a new contract coming his way this season, and coincidentally, of course, he isn’t in any hurry to start practicing with the Giants as he rests a sore right ankle.

Speaking with reporters yesterday for the second time since training camp opened, Burress called negotiations “long gone” and sounded resigned to the fact he’ll be playing under the six-year contract he signed before the 2005 season. Burress, who is scheduled to make $3.25 million this year, sought an increase that would have more than doubled his salary.

“If you wanted to get it done, it probably would have been done a long time ago,” Burress said. “We’re three or four weeks into [camp], so I’m just looking to get healthy and be 100 percent for the first game.”

Burress’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, had visited camp in hope of striking a new deal, but Burress doesn’t anticipate Rosenhaus will be making further house calls. Giants GM Jerry Reese, however, painted a different picture regarding the situation.

“We’re working on it and optimistic we’ll get something done,” Reese said.

Burress says he’s been receiving treatment on the ankle, which he injured before training camp, and has been wearing special padding in his shoe.

Linebacker Jonathan Goff, who fractured the transverse process in his back, isn’t an immediate candidate for injured reserve and could return for the Giants’ preseason finale. . . . Rookie wide receiver Mario Manningham (quad) is expected back in another week.

The Giants yesterday added two players, veteran S Stuart Schweigert and DE Antonio Reynolds. Schweigert started 42 games in four seasons for the Raiders and last Tuesday was waived by the Redskins. Reynolds was with the Giants briefly in May. To make room on the roster, two rookies, S Nehemiah Warrick (knee) and DE Robert Henderson (ankle) were waived/injured. Henderson, taken in the sixth round out of Southern Mississippi, becomes the first draft pick since 2006 not to make the team.
