WASHINGTON – Weeks after John McCain ridiculed Barack Obama by comparing him to celebrities like Paris Hilton, the Obama camp struck back yesterday, hitting McCain for hobnobbing with late-night talk-show hosts and getting cozy with President Bush.
“For decades, he’s been Washington’s biggest celebrity,” says the narrator of a new Obama ad, as footage rolls of McCain stepping onto the set of “Saturday Night Live” and appearing with Jay Leno and David Letterman.
“Lurching to the right, then to the left, the old Washington dance, whatever it takes. John McCain. A Washington celebrity playing the same old Washington games.”
The commercial also includes shots of McCain embracing President Bush.
In response, McCain spokesman Brian Rogers called it “kind of laughable that a campaign that’s so widely lauded for being so ruthlessly efficient, it takes them over two weeks to come up with a response. It’s kind of weak.”
