Popular in the 1800s but banned in the US since the early 1900s, the mystical absinthe has resurged since regaining legal status last year. But don’t be fooled by its oh-so-pretty emerald hue. This 138 proof anise brew packs a wallop; you’ll be nicely smudged after only a dozen or so sips. Want more evidence of its potency? In the absence of proper glassware, our unprepared Post crew did a taste test in wax paper cups. After 15 minutes, we noticed the cups becoming translucent as the alcohol ate through the wax coating and, eventually, the cup itself. If you’ve got the patience to juggle sugar cubes, ice water and a slotted spoon – plus $70 for a bottle of the “green fairy” – give it a whirl. But don’t say we didn’t warn you.
