BASEBALL: Yaz leaves hospital
Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski has been released from a hospital one week after having triple bypass heart surgery.
The former left fielder for the Red Sox was discharged on yesterday, according to team spokesman John Blake. He had surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital after experiencing chest pains.
* Roy Halladay beat Tampa Bay for the first time this season, and Vernon Wells homered and had three RBIs as the Blue Jays beat the AL East-leading Rays 6-2.
* Gavin Floyd pitched eight innings of four-hit ball, Nick Swisher homered, and the Chisox handed the Orioles their fifth straight loss, 8-3.
* Jose Lopez drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth and Roy Corcoran got his first career save for Seattle as Minnesota lost its fourth straight to fall 2 1/2 games behind Boston in the wild-card standings.
NFL: Vincent mum on NFLPA
Troy Vincent declined to discuss whether he’s interested in succeeding Gene Upshaw in leading the NFL Players’ Association because he is still mourning the union’s executive director’s death – and a person Vincent referred to as “a mentor.”
“I will not discuss anything outside of my mourning and sympathy for (the Upshaw) family,” Vincent wrote in an e-mail sent to the Associated Press, in what were the former NFLPA president’s first public comments since Upshaw died last week.
* The Patriots placed starting guard Stephen Neal on the physically-unable-to-perform reserve list and backup tackle Ryan O’Callaghan on the injured reserve list.
* The Bears released cornerback Ricky Manning Jr. yesterday. In two seasons with the Bears, he appeared in 31 games with 11 starts. With the Bears, Manning had 106 tackles, three sacks and five interceptions. He signed with the team as a restricted free agent in 2006.
* Browns wide receiver Joe Jurevicius will miss the first six weeks of the regular season while he recovers from knee surgery.
* The Panthers addressed their lack of depth at wide receiver by signing Samie Parker, a day after he was released by the Broncos.
HOOPS: Spain coach resigns
Aito Garcia Reneses has quit as Spain’s basketball coach after leading the national team to a silver medal at the Beijing Olympic Games.
* Former NBA player Wayman Tisdale, 44, had part of his right leg amputated Monday because of bone cancer.
* The Celtics signed their first-round draft pick J.R. Giddens. The 6-foot-5 point guard, the 30th pick in the draft, averaged 16.3 points and 8.8 rebounds for New Mexico during his senior season.
OBITS: Ex-Ali manager dies at 79
Jabir Herbert Muhammad, a longtime manager of boxer Muhammad Ali and son of the late Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad, died following heart surgery. He was 79.
* Former Trail Blazer center Kevin Duckworth died while on a trip to the Oregon Coast to host a free basketball clinic. He was 44.
GOLF: English required for LPGA
The LPGA Tour boasts players from all over the world, and it wants all of them to be able to speak English.
The LPGA will require players to speak English starting in 2009, with players who have been LPGA members for two years facing suspension if they can’t pass an oral evaluation of English skills. The rule is effective immediately for new players.
NASCAR: Sorenson joins Gillett
Reed Sorenson has signed a multiyear contract to join Gillett Evernham Motorsports, beginning in 2009.
