A college graduate who dreamed of becoming a nurse was gunned down in a drive-by shooting as she walked with friends to a Long Island party, police said yesterday.
Danielle Calabrese, 20, of Islip Terrace, was struck in the head by a stray slug in Brentwood at about 10:45 p.m. Friday after a half-dozen shots rang out, authorities said.
The former Suffolk Community College student was rushed to the hospital, where she died a short time later. Three other people were wounded, none seriously.
“This car drove by and [someone inside] just started shooting,” said a victim who described the vehicle as a white SUV.
Calabrese’s grandmother broke down yesterday at the news.
“She wanted to [be a nurse] because her mother is a nurse,” Carol Calabrese said from her Florida home. “She was always sweet and very happy. I can’t even think right now.”
Friends were reeling as well.
“She would never hurt a fly,” said Jessica Betancourt, 23. “She didn’t deserve this.”
No arrests had been made.
