GOLF: Furyk wins Slam
Jim Furyk sank an eight-foot eagle putt on the first playoff hole to defeat Padraig Harrington and win the PGA Grand Slam yesterday in Bermuda. Harrington and Furyk finished the 36-hole event at 4-under 136. Retief Goosen finished at 1-over, and Trevor Immelman finished at 5-over.
* Seve Ballesteros had 12-hour surgery to remove a brain tumor, and the 51-year-old golf great was conscious and stable yesterday in a Madrid hospital. It was not immediately known if the tumor was malignant.
NHL: Hollweg suspended
Maple Leafs left-winger Ryan Hollweg received an automatic three-game suspension yesterday from the NHL following his fourth game misconduct. He got a game misconduct for a boarding penalty in Monday’s 5-4 shootout loss to the Blues. It was Hollweg’s fourth game misconduct within 41 games.
OBIT: Chris Mims, 38
Chris Mims, a former defensive lineman for the San Diego Chargers beset by legal problems, was found dead in his apartment yesterday in Los Angeles. He was 38. Authorities said there was no evidence of foul play.
SOCCER: U.S. booters upset
Russell Latapy and Dwight Yorke scored the goals in the second half as Trinidad and Tobago upset the U.S. in a World Cup qualifier in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.
NFL: McCargo fails physical
Defensive tackle John McCargo failed his physical, voiding the trade that sent him from Buffalo to the Colts and sending his rights back to the Bills.
* NFL owners discussed playing spring preseason games as part of a possible expansion of the regular-season schedule. No action was taken by the owners as they wrapped up their meetings yesterday in St. Petersburg, Fla.
