LONDONDERRY, NH – Barack Obama urged his supporters yesterday not to get “cocky” despite his steady lead in the polls – reminding them that he got “spanked” by Hillary Rodham Clinton the last time that happened.
“For those of you who are feeling giddy or cocky or think this is all set, I just have two words for you: New Hampshire,” Obama told big-bucks supporters who forked over more than $30,000 at the Metropolitan Club yesterday.
“I’ve been in these positions before when we were favored, and the press starts getting carried away, and we end up getting spanked,” he said.
Obama was referring to the polls in the days after his stunning Iowa victory, when he had an average 9-point lead over Clinton, only to watch her mount a comeback after crying on the campaign trail.
Obama issued his cautionary plea even as his campaign prepared for a huge outdoor election-night rally in Chicago – which could turn into a massive victory party.
