FOOTBALL: TCU upsets No. 9 BYU
Jonathan Dalton threw two touchdowns to lead Texas Christian (7-1, 4-0 Mountain West) to a 32-7 victory over ninth-ranked Brigham Young (6-1, 2-1) 32-7 last night in Fort Worth, Texas. The loss snapped BYU’s 16-game winning streak.
* Christian Ponder threw for the go-ahead touchdown and Antone Smith ran for a score to help Florida State (5-1, 2-1 ACC) beat North Carolina State 26-17 last night in Raleigh. Russell Wilson passed for 181 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wolfpack (2-5, 0-3).
* Cowboys QB Tony Romo, who wants to play despite a broken pinkie on his throwing hand, practiced yesterday and threw passes to receivers. Coach Wade Phillips didn’t rule out the possibility of Romo playing Sunday at St. Louis.
GOLF: Complication slows Seve’s recovery
Seve Ballesteros developed a complication following brain tumor surgery, requiring doctors to remove a piece of the golf star’s skull to relieve pressure. The 51-year-old Spaniard was stable but still in intensive care at a Madrid hospital.
* Zach Johnson, who won the Texas Open last week, shot a 10-under 62 for a share of the first-round lead with Marc Turnesa in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open yesterday in Las Vegas . . . Suzann Pettersen shot a 4-under 68 to take the first-round lead in the inaugural Kapalua (Hawaii) LPGA Classic.
BASEBALL: Ng up for Seattle job
Kim Ng, a former assistant to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, is one of the four finalists to become the Mariners’ new GM. Other finalists include Milwaukee executive Jack Zduriencik, Arizona executive Jerry DiPoto and Toronto assistant Tony LaCava. Ng, 39, is currently assistant GM of the Dodgers. If hired by Seattle, she will become MLB’s first female GM.
HOCKEY: Savard fired in Chicago
The Blackhawks fired coach Denis Savard yesterday after a 1-2-1 start and replaced him with Joel Quenneville. Savard, a Hall of Fame player, became coach in November 2006 and finished that season with a record of 24-30-7 in 61 games. Last season, Savard led Chicago to its first 40-win season since 2001-02.
