DENVER – Underdog John McCain got a big boost yesterday in the critical swing state of Colorado from Hall of Fame Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway, who became a legend for leading his team to epic come-from-behind victories.
Elway – who led Denver to two Super Bowl championships – vowed that McCain will catch rival Barack Obama and win on Election Day.
“I know leadership under fire. Senator, it’s the fourth quarter. Some of the pundits have counted you out. I know a thing or two about comebacks,” Elway told thousands of loyal supporters while introducing the GOP presidential nominee at Western Arena.
“I can’t wait until Nov. 4 when you prove those pundits wrong!” Elway thundered.
“He is what our country needs in these troubled times. We need someone in the White House who will always put country first. And that man is John McCain.”
McCain, thrilled with the endorsement, joked of his days as a “mediocre” high-school football player.
The Arizona Republican then lit into Obama for wanting to boost taxes on the wealthy and “spread the wealth” to others, including those who pay no taxes.
“Just this morning, he said it again,” McCain said. “He believes in redistributing wealth, not in policies that grow the economy and create jobs.
“I am going to create wealth for all Americans, by creating opportunity for all Americans.”
“Senator Obama may say he’s trying to soak the rich, but it’s the middle class who are going to get put through the wringer. Because a lot of his promised tax increases missed the target.”
Meanwhile, Obama yesterday visited his gravely ill grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, 85, in Honolulu. Dunham helped to raise Obama.
“She’s really been one of the cornerstones of my life,” he told ABC, adding that he was concerned she might not make it to Election Day. With Post Wire Services
