STORM TASK D.J. WITH STOPPING USF FORCE

D.J. Kennedy has been asked to be a scorer, rebounder and ball-handler for St. John’s this season. Today, however, Red Storm coach Norm Roberts will ask Kennedy to take on another role – stopping the most overlooked player in the Big East, South Florida’s Dominique Jones.

“(Jones) reminds me of LeBron James,” Roberts told The Post. “He’s got a long way to go, but he’s got that kind of body, 6-4, 215 and he goes to the basket hard, almost daring you to take a charge or get out of the way.”

It will be the 6-foot-7 Kennedy’s mission to get in the way, even though Jones isn’t shy about saying he doesn’t think one player can stop him.

“Everyone double-teams me,” Jones told The Post. “No one guy can guard me one-on-one.”

Imagine how good Jones will be once he gains confidence!

“That just motivates me even more,” Kennedy’s said in rebuttal. “I did a pretty good job on him last year but this is another game. That quote makes me want to lock in even more.”

Roberts has used Paris Horne, who’s 6-3, to defend the opposing team’s best backcourt player this year. But when the Red Storm (11-9, 2-6 Big East) take the court today, Roberts wants to use Kennedy’s superior length and height to try to contain Jones, who’s averaging 18.4 points 4 assists and 1.6 steals and is off the chart in confidence.

“I think I am the most underrated player in the league,” said Jones. “I do a lot more for my team than any other player does for their team.”

The Bulls (7-13, 2-6) are using Jones at the point this season to prevent opposing teams from keeping the ball out of his hands. Jones grew up in Lake Wales, Fla., the same hometown as NBA star Amare Stoudemire. The two are friends and work out together in the offseason.

“A young LeBron James,” Jones said when asked about the James comparison. “I’ll have to keep pushing.”

And he’ll have to make a believer of Kennedy. Jones scored 24 points against St. John’s in a 72-58 Red Storm win last Feb. 2. Jones was 6-of-13 from the field, but got to the free throw line a LeBron-like 15 times.

“I can’t say that he reminds me of LeBron at all,” said Kennedy, “I can’t compare anyone to LeBron.”

As reported in yesterday’s Post, Storm point guard Malik Boothe (thumb surgery), whose been out since Dec. 21, saw a hand specialist Friday and will play today. Roberts said he’s cautiously optimistic that power forward Rob Thomas (groin) will play for the first time since Jan. 15.
