MLB: Commish Selig rakes it in
Baseball commissioner Bud Selig received a raise of about $3 million to nearly $17.5 million in 2007, according to MLB’s latest tax return. His compensation was listed at $17,470,491 for the 12 months that ended Oct. 31, 2007, up from $14,515,071 in the prior 12 months. The only players who received higher cash compensation that year were a trio of the Yankees: Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Jason Giambi.
* The Cubs traded pitcher Rich Hill to the Orioles for a player to be named. They also sent reliever Michael Wuertz to the Athletics for two minor leaguers.
HOCKEY: Senators impeach coach
The Senators fired head coach Craig Hartsburg yesterday, just 48 games into a season in which they have the NHL’s third worst record. Hartsburg was replaced with Cory Clouston.
* Chris Donovan had a goal and three assists as Northeastern beat Boston College 6-1 in the semifinals of the 57th annual Beanpot last night in Boston. In Monday’s final, the Huskies (18-6-2) will face Boston University, which beat Harvard, 4-3.
COLLEGE: Knight-to-UGA rumors stew
Bob Knight, who resigned as the Texas Tech coach almost one year ago, said he would return to the sideline if offered the right situation. Georgia, which fired Dennis Felton on Thursday, could be that situation, but the school hasn’t said if it is interested in Knight.
Meanwhile, Knight’s son, Pat, was publicly reprimanded by the Big 12 Conference yesterday, two days after the Texas Tech coach was ejected for twice running onto the court to argue about a foul.
* Rutgers pulled off a huge recruiting surprise when it landed Hoboken DT Isaac Holmes. The four-star behemoth, listed at anywhere from 285 to 315 pounds, was widely expected to choose between Pitt and Maryland. – Brian Lewis
