It’s looking more and more like the third try WON’T be the charm for Landon Donovan, with Bayern Munich’s chairman saying it’s unlikely that the U.S. star will stay beyond his short-term loan from the Galaxy.
“Donovan is an interesting player,” Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told Munich-based paper TZ. “But when you have (Miroslav) Klose, (Luca) Toni and (Ivica) Olic already under contract, we think the fourth player (striker) should really be a young player with perspective.”
The 26-year-old Donovan _ who couldn’t break through in earlier Bundesliga stints with Bayer Leverkusen _ joined the German champs during their winter break, and had four goals in friendlies, but hasn’t found the net in four appearances since in Bundesliga and German Cup tilts. With Toni hurting his Achilles Saturday vs. Hertha Berlin, that leaves Donovan just Saturday against Cologne and maybe the Champions League tilt vs. Sporting Lisbon to change Bayern’s minds.
What do you think of this news? Think this is just gamesmanship, or did the signing of Hamburg’s Olic really kill Donovan’s chances? Think David Beckham will still be in L.A. when/if Donovan gets back? Check in with your thoughts….
