In lieu of a traditional runway production with models stomping down a catwalk, Betsey Johnson turned her garment district offices in to Betsey Crocker’s food parade, complete with a sweet shop stocked with sugary confections, a soda fountain where models dressed as chefs, and waiters circulated with trays of mini burgers and french fry cones.
And contrary to all previously held beliefs about models and food, most of the leggy ladies dressed in Johnson’s fall collection munched on burgers and sipped bubbly throughout the two-hour party. And ordered seconds.
But despite the theme of the event – “recipes for dressing” – Johnson told us she can’t cook anything. Well, almost.
“I like to eat sliced artichoke salad in a restaurant and fish in a restaurant,” she told The Post. “I cannot function in the kitchen. What can I make? Popcorn! Microwave popcorn. Usually I’m dieting. I don’t eat that much, unfortunately. I eat the same thing everyday. Almonds and cheese and fish and salad and night. That’s it. But I carry my almonds and cheese with me. All day. Everywhere.”
The clothes on display – a pastel cropped knit sweater paired with a bubblegum pink corset and knit bicycle shorts with pom pom tassels, sequin leggings in black and red paired with a tulle tutu and oversized skull print cardigan – will all go in to production.
As for the three Obama buttons she was sporting on her shirt? Turns out Johnson’s got a serious case of O-fever.
“Hey! It’s President’s day and I love Obama,” she says. “And he is the upside of the downside and yay for that! America, you did it!”
