NBA: Suns desert Porter
The Suns fired coach Terry Porter yesterday, just four months into his first season, confirming a report by Peter Vecsey in Friday’s Post. Assistant Alvin Gentry was appointed interim coach.
Phoenix (28-23) trails Utah by one game for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.
* Phoenix Suns guard Jason Richardson was arrested in Scottsdale after police say he was driving 55 mph above the limit with his unrestrained 3-year-old son in the car. An officer clocked him at 90 mph in a 35 mph zone.
NFL: Jaguars release long-time RB Taylor
The Jaguars released running back Fred Taylor, 33, parting ways with their all-time leading rusher after 11 seasons and continuing the team’s offseason makeover. Taylor ranks 16th on the NFL’s career rushing list and was scheduled to make $6 million next season.
* The Ravens released cornerback Chris McAlister, a 10-year veteran and three-time Pro Bowler.
* The Bengals tagged kicker Shayne Graham as their franchise player.
GOLF: Johnson wins rain-shortened Pebble
Some 40 hours after hitting his last shot, Dustin Johnson won the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am when expected rainfall and a soggy course forced officials to cancel the final round. It was the second PGA Tour win for the 24-year-old, who finished at 15-under 201. Mike Weir was second, Retief Goosen third.
HORSE RACING: An Old Fashioned victory
In Hot Springs, Ark., Old Fashioned won the Southwest Stakes, passing Silver City on the second turn to remain undefeated in the first of Oaklawn Park’s three big Kentucky Derby prep races. The victory was a sweet one for trainer Larry Jones, who trained Hard Spun when that favored horse finished fourth in this race two years ago.
