Voters chose three City Council members in special elections yesterday to fill vacant seats.
Julissa Ferreras won in the 21st District in Queens – including Corona, East Elmhurst, parts of Jackson Heights and Elmhurst. Eric Ulrich won in Queens’ 32nd District, which covers Ozone Park and Howard Beach. And Ken Mitchell took the 49th District in Staten Island, including St. George, Port Richmond and Stapleton.
The Staten Island seat was vacated by Michael McMahon after he won the congressional seat previously held by Rep. Vito Fossella, the shamed lawmaker who didn’t seek re-election after a DWI bust and revelations he’d fathered a child out of wedlock.
The 21st District seat was vacated by Hiram Monserrate, who was elected to the state Senate. The 32nd District vacancy was left by Joseph Addabbo Jr., who also won a state Senate seat.
The winners of the nonpartisan special election will have to run in their parties’ primaries Sept. 8 and then in the general election.
