Emptying the notebook

PORT ST. LUCIE — Some tidbits after Jose Reyes rang up two homers and six RBIs, including a grand slam, in the Mets’ 9-0 blasting of the Marlins here today: * Manny who? The Mets have scored 18 runs on 27 hits in their first two games.

* Jerry Manuel isn’t popular with fellow Grapefruit League managers for exercising his right to have the Mets’ home games played under NL rules without a DH. The Tigers already have pleaded with Manuel to use the DH when they visit Port St. Lucie on March 25, but Manuel is sticking to his guns. He even had Oliver Perez bat second today against the Marlins to work on his bunting. “That doesn’t bother me,” Manuel said of the other team’s complaints. “We have to get ready for the season.”

* Much to Manuel’s delight, Daniel Murphy and Carlos Delgado advanced on balls in the dirt today. That has been a big focus by Manuel so far in camp.

* Perez, who threw two hitless innings yesterday, leaves next week to pitch for Mexico in the WBC. Manuel said the Mets will speak to Team Mexico manager Vinny Castilla in hopes that Castilla will keep Perez’s innings down during the international tournament. “We have to be very careful,” Manuel said.

* Manuel said fifth-starter candidate Tim Redding is “very close” to pitching off the mound again and hopes the veteran right-hander can make his first spring start March 8. Redding has only been able to throw from 150 off flat ground because of offseason surgery on a toe in his left foot.

* Manuel scratched his plan to have veterans Freddy Garcia and Livan Hernandez make the bus ride to Lakeland, Fla., tomorrow to face the Tigers. The two will now throw today against the Cardinals.

* J.J. Putz has been delayed slightly by the birth of his son in Arizona on Wednesday and won’t arrive back until tomorrow night. He will make his first Grapefruit League appearance Saturday in Lakeland.

* The Mets take on the Italian WBC representative here tomorrow morning, then play a regular Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals here at 1:10 p.m. The Cardinals game will be telecast on SNY.
