Review: Killzone 2: Frags You Can Be Proud Of

– A sizeable chunk of the voice-acting is good (Col. Radec especially), but your teammates sound like idiots. And they talk – a lot. Actually, ‘talking’ might not be the best word for it. ‘Curse-laden faux machismo and HOO-RA MOFO exaltations’ is more accurate. It’s not enough to ruin the game, and some of it is fun/funny, but ye gods, it can be grating.

– Why the hell can you revive your sometimes-stupid teammates, but they can’t revive you? What is the justification for this?

– Killzone is sort of remarkably derivative, especially when the set pieces (and a few of the characters) are compared to Gears Of War. You’ll know what I mean when you play it.

– No co-op? Bull. That’s like a cardinal sin these days.

Now, enough of that.

+ The enemy AI is smart. Really smart. You will never find yourself thinking of the red-eyed Helghast as cannon fodder. They will flank you, hurl a grenade to flush you out and adapt to your play style. I never fought any two sections the same way and neither did they. The teammate AI is also pretty good, but it makes a hell of a lot more mistakes than the enemy AI.

+ If you play stupid, you die. Killzone DEMANDS that you think tactically, even to the point where you have to consider if a quick accurate tap of the trigger is better for a sudden Helghast encounter – or if you should melee – or if you should spray & pray. (Hint: don’t spray & pray) This isn’t a ‘body count’ game. It is a frag-fest in a certain sense, but there are subtleties to the game that might take a while to be fully understood.

+ The multiplayer gets better as you go. The more you invest in fragging online, the more you get back and the more satisfying it is. This is thanks to the RPG character system in Killzone. Your grunt gets more and more awesome. And as your grunt gets more awesome, the more you can customize him. So, kids, go kill each other. I recommend going bang-bang crazy in a 32-person Warzone fight.

Killzone 2 initially struck me as a derivative shooter that, while looking fantastic, was the same-old same-old. I was wrong. Very, very wrong.

My unalterable Left 4 Dead love aside, Killzone 2 is definitely one of the best first-person shooters on the market right now. And it certainly is the PS3’s strongest title.
