Weinsteins Taking A 5-Month Breather

The Weinstein Co., which at one point planned to release as many as nine films in a nine-week stretch between Oct. 31 and the end of last year — only three actually arrived, with two more turning up in limited release early this year — is taking a five-month breather after Friday’s opening of the long-delayed “Crossing Over” (update: here’s a link to my 1.5 star review) in New York and Los Angeles. The latest schedule I received from the studio on Thursday lists their next release as Andrew Jarecki’s thriller “All Good Things” with Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst on July 24. Their biggie, penciled in for Aug. 21, is of course Quentin Tarantino‘s World War II epic “Inglourious Basterds” starring Brad Pitt, supposedly set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. “H2,” Rob Zombie’s sequel to his 2007 “Halloween” reboot, is scheduled for a week later, on August 28. One of the films on last fall’s list, the World War II thriller “Shanghai” with John Cusack and Gong Li (pictured) is now listed to open on Sept. 4 — Labor Day weekend. Listed merely as a “summer” release is the comedy “Jankey Promoters” starring Ice Cube, originally slated to open on March 27. According to the more extensive calendar at Box Office Mojo, the only other specific 2009 release date the Weinsteins have listed is the all-star musical “Nine” on Nov. 25. Three other titles that were originally due in 2008 do not currently have scheduled release dates other than 2009 at this time: the sports drama “Hurricane Season” starring Forrest Whitaker and two Dimension label titles, the Cormac McCarthy thriller “The Road” with Viggo Mortensen and the comedy “Youth in Revolt” starring Michael Cera. Another update: Box Office Mojo now lists “Youth in Revolt” with an Oct. 30 opening, which suggests the Weinsteins may try to book it into the Toronto International Film Festival like Cera’s last theatrical release, the underperforming “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist.”
