If they had the technology to clone cops, Captain Milt Marmara of the 69th Precinct would want Police Officer Matthew Woods at the front of the line.
Canarsie’s midnight watch patrolman received special recognition for his outstanding police work last week when he was named Brooklyn South “Cop of the Month” by Chief Joseph Fox, the commanding officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South.
Woods’ family and friends joined the young officer at Patrol Borough Brooklyn South headquarters, where he was given the award.
Marmara, who attended the ceremony, said that Woods was instrumental for “solving a horrendous shooting of a teen we had in the Bayview Houses” over the summer.
In that case, the suspect reportedly robbed his victim, but then shot him after he got the loot.
“That made it particularly nasty,” Marmara said.
But Woods’ award wasn’t just for the one arrest. For the past six years at the 69th Precinct in Canarsie, he has exemplified what it means to protect and serve.
“Police Officer Woods has a very high work ethic,” said Marmara. “He’s very tenacious, especially when he’s going after guys with guns and robbers.”
“He’s really done a great job of reducing the violence in the precinct by arresting the individuals who are causing the violent crime in the precinct,” said Marmara. “If it was up to me, I would give him a field promotion to detective tomorrow.”
Marmara said that Woods has helped the 69th Precinct continue its ongoing drop in crime. According to recent CompStat numbers, felony crime in Canarsie has fallen by 14 percent as of September 27.
