Jets trade for Braylon Edwards

The Jets have traded for troubled Browns WR Braylon Edwards.

The Jets have traded WR Chansi Stuckey, LB Jason Trusnik and two draft picks to the Browns for Edwards.

Edwards, the third overall pick in the 2005 draft, is being investigated for an alleged altercation with a promoter who is friends with Cavaliers star LeBron James in Cleveland on Sunday night.

He also has had problems with Eric Mangini, the former Jets coach who now holds that position with the Browns.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer describes the deal as the latest example of Manigni’s “my way or the highway” approach.

“Personal conduct is very important to me,” Mangini said Monday. “It’s important for us and to the players. It’s important today, it’s important tomorrow.”

Reporter Tony Grossi writes, “Edwards ran afoul of Mangini’s team rules long before the latest incident. He was drinking with receiver Donte Stallworth the night of Stallworth’s tragic DUI accident (He was not with Stallworth when the accident occurred). He was an infrequent participant in Mangini’s offseason program and missed several practices in the offseason and training camp with an undisclosed injury believed to have occurred in a pickup basketball game.

“While professing to ‘buy in’ to Mangini’s selfless team concept, Edwards was known to pout when he wasn’t the focal point of the Browns’ offense.

Edwards’ nightclub incident happened the night after “Edwards had an altercation in the game against Cincinnati and also failed to catch a pass for the first time in his career.”

The NFL is investigating whether Edwards violated the league’s conduct policy following accusations he allegedly punched promoter Edward Givens, a friend of NBA star James, early Monday morning following an argument in downtown Cleveland.

“We are looking into it,” league spokesman Greg Aiello said Tuesday in an e-mail to The Associated Press. “It is premature to speculate about potential discipline.”

Although Edwards has not been charged with a crime, the league’s conduct policy states that discipline may be imposed for “the use or threat of violence.”

Cleveland police are also looking deeper into the allegations against Edwards – at the request of city prosecutor Victor Perez’s office.

Last November, Edwards was fined $150 and given 30 hours of community service after he was found guilty of driving 120 mph.

Edwards has 10 receptions for 139 yards and no touchdowns this season for the Browns, who are 0-4. In 2008, he caught 55 passes for 873 yards and three touchdowns, one year after his breakout season of 2007, when he had 80 catches for 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns.

The Giants discussed trading for Edwards to replace Plaxico Burres but the teams could not come to a deal on terms.

The Jets and Browns were involved in a draft-day trade that allowed the Jets to move up to select QB Mark Sanchez.
