Marts, gold end higher

Stocks rose on investor optimism about third-quarter earnings.
The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 131.50 points, or 1.4 percent, to 9,731.25. That puts the Dow up 243.58, or 2.6 percent over the past two days.
The S&P 500 index added 14.26 to 1,054.72 and the Nasdaq composite index rose 35.42 to 2,103.57.
Gold touched a record $1,045 an ounce in New York on speculation that currencies will depreciate, spurring inflation and boosting the appeal of gold as a safe haven. The yellow metal has climbed 18 percent this year.
The dollar lost 0.42 percent against a basket of major currencies. The euro gained 0.44 percent to $1.4713 and the dollar fell 0.82 percent to 88.77 yen.
