NFL: League to investigate Edwards incident
The league is investigating whether Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards violated the league’s conduct policy following accusations he assaulted a man outside a nightclub. Edwards allegedly punched promoter Edward Givens, a friend of LeBron James, early Monday morning following an argument in downtown Cleveland.
* The Cowboys’ practice facility collapsed last May in winds it should have been able to withstand, according to a report released by a federal agency that investigated the accident that injured a dozen people.
* Steelers safety Troy Polamalu is expected to practice on a limited basis today for the first time since tearing the MCL in his left knee Sept. 10 against Tennessee — and has not been ruled out of Sunday’s game at Detroit. . . . The Ravens placed linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo on the injured reserve list with a torn left quadriceps.
MLB: Owners approve sale of Cubs
Major League baseball owners yesterday unanimously approved the sale of the Cubs from the bankrupt Tribune Co. to the family of online brokerage billionaire and longtime fan Joe Ricketts.
* Fredi Gonzalez is coming back as manager of the Marlins, ending two days of speculation about his status.
* The White Sox exercised club options for 2010 on right-hander Freddy Garcia and lefty reliever Matt Thornton.
* Phillies left-handed reliever J.C. Romero will have surgery today to repair the flexor tendon in his left forearm and needs five to six months to recover.
COLLEGE: Tebow returns to practice
Florida quarterback Tim Tebow returned to practice on a limited basis, though he still has not been cleared to play in Saturday’s game against No. 4 LSU. He was taking snaps with the first-team offense and throwing passes, 10 days after suffering a concussion against Kentucky on Sept. 26.
* Levi Brown passed for 191 yards, and Dantavious Parker ran for two touchdowns out of the Wildcat formation to lead Troy to a 31-7 victory over visiting Middle Tennessee last night. The Trojans (3-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) have won four straight over the Blue Raiders (3-2,1-1), retaining the Palladium Trophy awarded to the winner since 2004.
ETC.: Serena reclaims No. 1 ranking
In Beijing, Serena Williams reclaimed the No. 1 world ranking from Dinara Safina by beating Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 6-2 in her second-round match at the China Open. In men’s play, defending champion Andy Roddick lost to Polish qualifier Lucasz Kubot 6-2, 6-4.
* Phil Mickelson says a minor back injury that flared up last week during practice will not keep him out of the Presidents Cup this week at Harding Park in San Francisco.
* Ferrari will decide today on the timing of Felipe Massa‘s comeback after his life-threatening accident in Hungary. The decision will be made after Massa completes two days in the team’s simulator.
* The Bruins signed 21-year-old left wing Milan Lucic to a three-year contract extension that would keep Lucic in Boston through the 2012-13 season.
* A service worker died yesterday in the press box at Dodger Stadium, a day before the start of the NLDS between the Cardinals and Dodgers. John Foster, 51, was servicing the press box coffee machine before he collapsed. Cause of death was not immediately released.
